After years of unimaginable challenges, Maya arrived at ALYN ready to fight for her independence.
At the age of six, Maya began suffering from severe headaches. An MRI revealed a rare genetic abnormality affecting her brain and spinal cord, and she underwent a complex emergency surgery. The procedure was complicated, and her recovery was long and difficult. Yet despite the challenges, Maya refused to give up.
Over the following years, she gradually returned to an active life. She trained in several sports, including climbing, several times a week, pursued her passion for singing, and took part in a Excellence Program as an honors student.
Then, seven years later, everything changed again.
A condition known as cervical instability began placing pressure on her brainstem, causing a significant decline in her health. She was forced to stop attending school, and a year later, after a fall revealed additional complications, she lost sensation and movement in her legs. Maya began using a wheelchair.
Her medical journey eventually took her beyond Israel. She underwent a highly complex surgery in Spain with one of the world's leading specialists. But even after the operation, the challenges continued. Following additional complications and her return to Israel, Maya arrived at ALYN for rehabilitation.
At ALYN, the long road back to independence began.
A multidisciplinary team of physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and rehabilitation specialists created a personalized treatment plan focused on rebuilding her strength, stability, confidence, and independence.
The hard work paid off.
Step by step, Maya began reclaiming activities that had once seemed impossible. Today, she is walking again, making remarkable progress, and continuing her journey toward an active and independent future.
But for Maya, rehabilitation was about much more than physical milestones.
Recently, she took part in a fundraising performance benefiting the children of ALYN Hospital. Standing on stage, and singing before more than 300 people, Maya shared something far greater than a performance. For someone who had spent years navigating surgeries, setbacks, and uncertainty, it was a powerful declaration of resilience, hope, and determination.
Maya's story is a reminder that even when the road ahead seems overwhelming, progress is possible. With courage, expert care, unwavering support, and belief in what lies ahead, extraordinary things can happen.
Today, Maya is walking forward once again, one step at a time.
