Botulinum Toxin Clinic

Botulinum Toxin Clinic

The injection is done under local anesthesia, in a special clinic. In certain cases the injection is also done under ultrasound guidance.

Approx. 1-2 weeks after the injection, when the effect is felt, a cast or a splint is placed to retain the desired position of the joint for around 3 weeks. For some children, a series of casts is used to treat the condition (in other words, the child needs to come once a week to replace the cast). The decision on whether to place one cast or a series of casts is a professional decision made by the clinic staff. We will inform you at the time of the injection whether a single or a series of casts will be needed.

After 3 weeks, we will remove the cast at the clinic, and then the process of intensive physiotherapy will start to maintain the range that was achieved. Make sure that you have been scheduled for physiotherapy reinforcement at your regular treatment setting for the period after the cast is removed.

Your cooperation in this treatment is critical, mainly with regards to doing stretches on a daily basis at home. The treatment is ineffective without regular stretching over time.

If your child has orthoses, please bring them with you to the Botulinum clinic to check with the clinic staff whether the orthoses will be suitable even after the injection, or whether there is a need to replace/renew the orthoses.
